The Most Reverend Robert Baker, STD, is the twelfth Bishop of Charleston. Bishop Baker is the
shepherd and spiritual leader of the Diocese of Charleston, which encompasses the entire state of
South Carolina. The diocese includes 118 active parishes and missions, and 28 Catholic schools. The
current Catholic population in South Carolina is approximately 158,000 souls, less than four percent of
the state population.
Bishop Baker recently celebrated his 37th anniversary of priestly Ordination. He was ordained for the
Diocese of St. Augustine, Florida. As a priest, Bishop Baker served as a college chaplain, seminary
professor and formator, and well as a parish pastor. He was known and respected as an advocate and
tireless worker with and for the poor and marginalized.
On July 13, 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed then-Fr. Robert Baker the Bishop of Charleston.
As the Bishop of Charleston, he chose as his motto the expression, “Rejoicing in Hope.” Taken from
Romans 12:12, it is a summary of his ministry and efforts for the Gospel. His first pastoral letter as
Bishop was, “The Redemption of Our Bodies,” which was a synthesis of Pope John Paul II's theology
of the body, and a call for a clearer and more helpful explanation of the Church’s teachings on
marriage, sexuality, and family life.
