CLEMSON – A newly ordained priest for the Diocese of Charleston is already a published author.
Father Jeffrey Kirby, parochial vicar at St. Andrew in Clemson, St. Paul in Seneca, and St. Francis in Walhalla, is one of the contributing
writers to the newly released “Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy.”
The book, edited by Michael L. Coulter, PhD; Stephen M. Krason, PhD, JD; Richard S. Myers, JD; and Joseph A. Varacalli, PhD, has more
than 800 topics from over 300 contributors. It costs $150.
Coulter is a professor of political science and humanities at Grove City College; Krason is a professor of political science and legal studies at
Franciscan University of Steubenville; Myers is a professor of law at Ave Maria School of Law; and Varacalli is a professor of sociology and
director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Nassau Community College – State University of New York.
The book is described as a “comprehensive introduction to the Catholic vision of society, social relations, and the human being,” according to
a press release by publisher Scarecrow Press. The book combines theoretical work on topics and scholarly disciplines such as “economics,
moral theology, natural law, philosophy, psychology; social science perspectives on subjects such as alcoholism and drug abuse, forgiveness
and mercy, and globalization; and treatment of practical policy implications that flow from applying the Catholic religious, moral, and
intellectual tradition to contemporary issues such as abortion, assisted suicide, immigration policy, school choice, and torture.”
The encyclopedia reflects a range of Catholic thought but emphasizes the American situation, according to the release. “Its interdisciplinary
approach offers insights from a variety of perspectives: theological, philosophical, historical, economical, sociological, political,
psychological, and legal.”
Father Kirby’s articles for the encyclopedia include subjects such as the anti-Christ, Pontifical Council Cor Unum, and John Cardinal Krol.
